Step-by-step guide to installing the Pro-Truck Stage 2 shocks kit on a Toyota Tacoma. Learn tools, process, and tips for a successful lift.

Upgrading your Toyota Tacoma with a Pro-Truck Stage 2 shocks kit is one of the best ways to improve off-road performance and ride quality. This kit, designed for 2016-2023 models with 0-2.5 inches of lift, includes front coilovers and rear shocks that provide superior damping and control. Whether you're tackling trails or daily driving, this installation guide will walk you through the process step by step.

Before you begin, ensure you have the right tools and a safe workspace. The installation typically takes 4-6 hours for an experienced DIYer. If you're new to suspension work, take your time and follow each step carefully. Let's get started.

Tools and Parts Needed

To install the Pro-Truck Stage 2 shocks kit on your Tacoma, gather the following tools: a floor jack, jack stands, torque wrench, socket set (metric and standard), pry bar, spring compressor, and penetrating oil. You'll also need the Pro-Truck Stage 2 Shocks Kit for 2016-2023 Toyota Tacoma w/0-2.5, which includes front coilovers and rear shocks. Optional but helpful: an impact wrench and a helper.

Safety first: wear gloves and eye protection. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and securely supported. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.

  • Floor jack and two jack stands
  • Torque wrench (ft-lb and in-lb)
  • Socket set: 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 15mm, 18mm, 21mm
  • Spring compressor (for front coilovers)
  • Penetrating oil (e.g., WD-40 or PB Blaster)

Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle

Start by parking the Tacoma on a flat surface and engaging the parking brake. Loosen the lug nuts on all four wheels slightly, then jack up the front of the vehicle and place jack stands under the frame. Remove the front wheels. For the rear, jack up the rear axle and place stands under the frame. Remove the rear wheels. This gives you access to the suspension components.

Apply penetrating oil to all bolts you'll be removing, especially the lower strut bolts and sway bar links. Let it soak for a few minutes to ease removal.

Step 2: Remove the Front Shocks

Begin with the front suspension. Disconnect the sway bar end links from the lower control arm using a 14mm socket. Then, remove the upper strut mount nuts (three 12mm nuts) under the hood. Next, remove the lower strut bolt (18mm) that connects the shock to the lower control arm. Carefully lower the strut assembly out of the vehicle. Repeat on the other side.

If your Tacoma has electronic sway bar disconnect, be cautious with the wiring. For manual disconnects, simply unbolt. Once both front struts are out, compress the springs using a spring compressor before disassembling the old strut. Transfer the spring and top mount to the new Pro-Truck Stage 2 coilover if needed. Note: the kit may come pre-assembled, so check before starting.

  • Use a spring compressor to safely compress the coil spring before removing the top nut.
  • Mark the orientation of the top mount to ensure correct reassembly.

Step 3: Install the Front Coilovers

Install the new Pro-Truck Stage 2 coilover by reversing the removal process. First, loosely install the upper strut mount nuts (12mm) under the hood. Then, insert the lower bolt (18mm) through the lower control arm and shock. Tighten all bolts to manufacturer specifications: upper nuts to 18 ft-lb, lower bolt to 111 ft-lb. Reconnect the sway bar end links and torque to 33 ft-lb.

Repeat on the passenger side. Once both front coilovers are installed, double-check all bolts are torqued. Reinstall the front wheels and lower the vehicle to the ground. Do not fully tighten the lug nuts until the vehicle is on the ground.

Step 4: Remove the Rear Shocks

Move to the rear of the Tacoma. The rear shocks are easier to access. Remove the lower shock bolt (18mm) using a socket and breaker bar. Then, remove the upper shock bolt (18mm) located in the frame rail. Pull the old shock out. Repeat on the other side. Note: the rear shocks may be under slight tension, so support them as you remove the bolts.

If your Tacoma has a leaf spring suspension, you may need to slightly lift the axle with a jack to relieve pressure on the shock. This makes removal smoother.

  • Use penetrating oil on the upper bolts if they are rusted.
  • Have a helper hold the shock while you remove the bolts to prevent it from falling.

Step 5: Install the Rear Shocks

Install the new Pro-Truck Stage 2 rear shocks by first attaching the upper bolt (18mm) loosely. Then, attach the lower bolt (18mm). Torque both bolts to 41 ft-lb. Ensure the shock is oriented correctly with the reservoir (if equipped) facing the correct direction. Repeat on the other side.

Once both rear shocks are installed, reinstall the rear wheels and lower the vehicle. Torque the lug nuts to 83 ft-lb in a star pattern.

Step 6: Final Checks and Test Drive

After installation, check all bolts are torqued to spec. Inspect the suspension for any loose components or interference. Lower the vehicle completely and bounce the front and rear to settle the suspension. Then, measure the ride height to ensure it's even on both sides. The Pro-Truck Stage 2 kit typically provides a 2-inch lift on the Tacoma.

Take a short test drive on a smooth road, then on rough terrain. Listen for any clunks or rattles. After 50-100 miles, re-torque all suspension bolts as they may settle. Enjoy your improved off-road capability and on-road comfort!

  • Re-torque all bolts after 100 miles to ensure they haven't loosened.
  • Check headlight aim after lift to avoid blinding oncoming traffic.

Installing the Pro-Truck Stage 2 shocks kit on your Toyota Tacoma is a rewarding upgrade that enhances both performance and appearance.
